On-trend growth for Chinese wheeled loaders

By Chris Sleight |  25 April 2019

Demand for wheeled loaders in China grew from 70,400 units in 2017 to 92,600 machines last year, a 32 per cent increase. This was in line with the Chinese equipment market’s overall growth in 2018.

The surge in infrastructure work in China over the last three years has been the main driver of growth for wheeled loader sales in China. However, the excavator segment has been a greater beneficiary than these traditional products.

As well as being better suited to certain applications, there is pressure on wheeled loader sales in China from ‘economical’ alternatives. The under 100 horsepower segment is now dominated by such machines, and sales of these largely locally built, un-engineered agricultural machines, which fall outside the scope of Off-Highway Research’s report, are believed to be in the region of 200,000 units last year.

Wheeled loaders continue to be an important export product for equipment manufacturers in China. The volume of machines sold overseas last year, although exports a s a percentage of production slipped slightly compared to 2017.
