Indian backhoe market remains resilient

By Chris Sleight |  12 July 2021

Demand for backhoe loaders in India declined only 4 per cent last year, despite the impacts of the Covid Pandemic. Although volumes were lower than the peak seen in 2018, with more than 38,000 backhoe loaders sold last year, India still remains not only the world’s largest market for this type of equipment, but a bigger market than the rest of the world combined.

“The backhoe loader is very popular due to its versatility, mobility, low ownership and operating costs, easy financing, and excellent resale value, as well as the widespread availability of after sales support.

“Specialist machines such as mini and midi excavators, and telescopic handlers - although more efficient in some applications - are considerably more expensive to buy and maintain, and do not have the mobility offered by backhoe loaders. These factors make backhoe loaders the preferred choice of small contractors and first-time buyers,” said Off-Highway Research’s new report, The Backhoe Loader Industry in India.

Off-Highway Research expects Indian backhoe loader demand to return to the high level seen in 2018 over the medium term. However, the on-going pandemic is of course a source of uncertainty.
